VietNamNet Bridge – To mark the 90th anniversary of the October Revolution in Russia (November 7, 1917-2007), an exhibition entitled 'The Mark of Russia" featuring paintings by Tran Quan Ngoc was launched at the Youth Cultural House in HCMC on Sunday. The 57 works on display feature landscapes and portraits painted during the time the artist spent in Russia. Most of the paintings were completed in the 1960s when Ngoc studied at the Chemistry Faculty at Lomonosov University and the Painting Faculty of Lenin University of Pedagogy in Moscow. Ngoc told the Daily that as a student in Moscow, he spent most of his summers working for one month in order to save money to travel for the other two months. The artist trekked around the former Soviet Union to capture the beautiful landscape and people in his pictures. The exhibition features only a small collection of Ngoc's work in Russia, which numbers over a thousand. The artist brings audiences a vivid and unique perspective of the country. Scenes include silver poplar trees in autumn, the church and ancient towns of the golden ring surrounding Moscow and early evening in the outskirts of Moscow. Audiences will have the opportunity to contemplate distant and rural landscapes including Leo Tolstoy's farmhouse, a village in Khortytsia Island in Ukraine where Ho Chi Minh once resided, a village in Siberia and a rural market in Georgia. The exhibition also features portraits of Russian people from all walks of life including a mother, a female worker, a sailor, Ngoc's professor Trofimova and Vladimir Lenin. The portrait of Lenin is made from Lenin-related badges collected by the artist. Ngoc graduated from Lenin University of Pedagogy and Lomonosov University in Moscow in 1967. He has held five solo exhibitions in Russia, Hanoi and HCMC and participated in many other exhibitions with other artists. His paintings can be seen in Vietnam, Russia, USA, France, Denmark and Japan. The exhibition runs until November 11 at the Youth Cultural House, 12 Pham Ngoc Thach Street, District 1, HCMC.
