VietNamNet Bridge - A giant gemstone weighing 1.8 kg, the second largest found so far in Vietnam, is being on public display at Hanoi’s Melia Hotel together with other precious stones as the Exhibition on Gemstones and Gemstone Products kicked off on November 6.
Called Than Chau Bao Vat (Than Chau’s Treasure), the ruby weighs 1.8 kilos (9,000 carats) and is worth several million dollars.
It belongs to the exhibition organizer - Than Chau Ngoc Viet Gemstones and Jewelry Company Limited, hence the ruby’s name.
The biggest ruby found in Vietnam to date is the “Vietnam Star”, a 2.1kg ruby worth more than US$10 million, which has been declared a national treasure.
Also on display are various other natural and cut gemstones, including rubies, sapphires, spinels, peridots, tourmalines, quartz and opals.
The exhibition marks the twentieth anniversary of the discovery of the first gemstone mine in the country and the tenth anniversary of the founding of Than Chau Company.
The event is organized under the auspices of the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism, the Vietnam Chamber of Commerce and Industry (VCCI) and the Vietnam Institute for Gemstones and Jewelry.
